Description
Dec. 19, 1943. My Dearest One - Sunday again - and how I miss you and long for a letter - but of course I realize that one has not had time to reach me yet - but each week makes it closer. Well, a shipment of clothing finally reached us - so now we all have overcoats, good shoes, heavy underwear - but no trousers were large enough for me - but the ones I was captured in are fairly good and I managed for a pair of British ones - so I will get by O.K. - We also get a weekly issue of Red & Food parcels now - so we feel like we are sitting on top of the world - As much as I hate that it happened, being a P.O.W. is really an experience - Without a doubt, it brings out either the worst or the best that is in a man - There is no halfway - but most of us will come thru O.K. - Don't worry about me - "I'll be back, Darling," - just as I told you I would - So take care of yourself - and be happy that I am alive - (redacted) I wont tell you "Merry X-mas" again for it will be long past when you (illegible) member - I think of you always - Love, Gaines Lt.
