Description
8402. 89 Ave Woodhaven 21 NY March 5, 1945 Mr. Amos. Carter Fort Worth, Texas Mr dear Mr. Carter: Like Amon Jr., my son Bill is a P.O.W. formerly of Oflag 64 which so recently has been emptied by either or both the Russians-Germans. Have you heard anything further through your news channels or via Senator Tom Connally? I've spoken with several of the men just repatriated and some of the liberated - Lt. Schilt, LI. city NY, Lt. Englander, Hollis, LI., Dr. Gruenberg, NY City; all seem to deny the data that was cabled to the Senator saying that the camp was emptied in 2 evacuations by & under heavy guard, one section of which they were part was overtaken by the Russians. The evacuation took place Jan. 21st. - not Jan. 5 as the American Embassy reported. Such wide difference of date is certainly confusing, isn't it? Has Mr. Jesse Jones of Houston heard anything from his nephew Jack? I'd appreciate your personl and valued opinion and confidential data. My son is the "Montata Bill" - 1st Lt. Wm. C. Burghardt, P.O.W. #4184 - formerly Ski Couch at U. of Montana and Ski Maestro at Mt. Rainier as well as former Dude Rancher of the NW Rockies. He is one of the several men mentioned in "Road to Tunis", by David Rame, English War Correspondent. Awaiting your reply, I am (illegible), in hope that you soon will get the news you too await, Sincerely W H Burghardt Incidentally - Did your paper carry either the AP or UP sports stories on Bill back in March 25, 1944 and April 17, 1944? Any other dates?
