Description
March 14, 1943 Dear Mr. Carter, The papers carry an item saying that Amon Jr. is missing in action. I am unable to express in words how distressed I am and how I feel for you. The best I can do is join you in a fervent prayer that he is safe and well as a prisoner of war. Senator Herring's boy, Clyde, Jr, is missing in the same action. It might be some consolation to know that Herring was told that the number of dead, all identified, was 57- wounded 172 and missing over 2000. The missing are presumed to be prisoners of war and in Italian camps. This is small consolation but at least it engenders hope. Sometime in the near future I hope to see you and tell you in person just how unhappy I am that this tragedy should come to you who have dedicated your existance to the aid and betterment of others. Sincerely, Harry Crookes
