Description
Wednesday March 17, 1943 Dear Amon: Bea and I have wanted so much to come and see you but understood your desire not to be disturbed. Ever since the news came you and Amon Jr have been uppermost in our thoughts but we did not know him to convey to you our feeling of sympathy and concern. Frank was at Camp Walten the day the message was received and Ben and Frances told him of it that same afternoon. He was crushed as we were, but expressed the hopeful feeling that Amon Jr would be heard from - The two boys being about the same age, and such close friends since they were born, it seemed to me that Frank's immediate reaction of hopefulness and confidence in Amon's security was a a good omen. There was never a truer saying that "where there is life there is hope", and conversely, I believe, As long as there can be hope there can be life. Amon, we realize how helpless we are to aid you in this crisis- words are futile, a letter is inadequate. Perhaps all that friends can do is to "standby", with the knowledge whenever you feel you need a helping hand, they are eager to help you. When you feel like seeing Bea and me let me know. We do want to clasp your hand so you will know we, like you, are praying for the safe return one we, too, love George (over) Frank left Camp Walters last Sat morning. We heard from him Monday night. He is at Fort Riley. Burwell will be inducted on April 5. Sis, who is in school at New Mexico Military Inst. at Roswell, is planning to enlist in the Air Corps Reserve as soon as he reaches 17 1/2 yrs - which will be about June 1- I will soon have 3 boys in the service. It gives me a grave feeling- But how small it is in comparison to one who has so courageously given and faced the crisis as you have. God bless you and yours, Amon, He will sustain you when all others fail. George
