Description
March 18, 1943. Dear Amon: One of the Washington papers carried an item two or three days ago to the effect that your boy was "missing in action," in the north African area, I believe it said. When I read the item I thought I would come back to it later and and clip and mail it to you; but the paper got away from me and I haven't been able to find it since. I certainly hope that the report was erroneous in the first place, and, if it was correct, then that the boy has gotten safely back to his command and is well. I have a nephew (Mabel's sister's boy, Clarence Van Andell Amis) in the North African area. He tried to join the Army Air Forces for Ground Duty training as an Aviation Cadet (his vision precluded training for flying duty); but the Aviation Cadet Examining Board at Dallas and Hicks Field (Fort Worth) bungled his case and he was inducted under Selective service. He has been assigned to the Assistant General's Department. If your boy is actually "missing in action," you have my sincere condolence; but I am still hoping that he is back with his command, and that he will soon be back safely at home wth you. Best wishes. Sincerely yours, Clifford.
