- March 21, 1943 Dear Mr. Carter: Just want to drop a note and tell you how deeply I hated hearing the news about Amon. All of us had great times growing up together, and until something happens to one of our old group in some far off war zone we don't realize just what this war has meant to us. Just wanted to let you know how much I'm hoping for Amon's safety. Our friendship in the past has meant a great deal to me. Phyllis is away now, but I know that she wants to join me in expressing our hopes to you. Very sincerely, John Penn
