- Description
- Opp, Alabama April 15, 1943 Mr. Amon Carter Fort Worth, Texas Dear Mr. Carter, In today's "Montgomery Advertiser," I notice an article about your receiving word, officially from your son who is a Prisoner of War in Germany. My husband Lt. N.J. Meadows-Headquarters, 17th F.A. A.P.O. 302, New York, N.Y. is also a prisoner of war in Germany, but as yet it is unofficial. This is how we know about N.J.: March 3rd we received a radio short-wave broadcast from Germany and there were eight U.S. soldiers sending messages home. My husband was second on the recorded message & some women in Birmingham heard it & called us immediately. He called his mother & saide, "Hello, Mother. I am a prisoner of war in Germany. I am fine & they are treating me all right. You can get in touch with me through the Red Cross." Then on March 5th I, his wife, received a telegram from the War Dep't saying that my husband was missing in action, since Feb. 14, also, and was in the North African area. N.J., too, being in the Field Artillery, might by chance, be in the same place & in the same Battery & regiment as your son. If it is possible and not too much trouble, would you let me know what Regiment, its, your son is in, and also if you can get in touch with him in any way. If you can, would you have him try to look n.J. up in Germany? We have an eleven week old daughter of which my husband doesn't know yet and I'd certainly like him to know that his wife & baby are fine. Of course i'm quite sure that as soon as is possible, the War Dep't. will let us know, too but until then, who knows how long it will take. One of the greatest tasks of ours these days is to keep the men's morale up & to know we're both alive & well would mean so much to him!! We've tried to get messages to him through the Red Cross, but you see until he's identified as a prisoner the messages & letters wouldn't go far before stopping in an office somewhere. I would appreciate any information that you could give me on this matter and I'll be only too glad to help you, if necessary- and possible. Yours truly Mrs. N.J. Meadows Opp, Alabama
