Description
Kaufman Texas April 16th 1943. Dear Mr. Carter_ I noticed in news yesterday that your son is reported a prisoner of Germany_ perhaps you didn't see in the papers that our son Roy J is one of ten U.S. officers interned at Oflag 9 A/Z Germany_ Just where this particular camp is we do not know but we were informed by the General Secretary of the Worlds Committee of Y.M.C.A. of Geneva Switzerland, that Roy J was transferred from Camp unstated Italy, to Oflag 9 A/Z Camp Germany March 3rd. His internment number is not known, but the government sent to us two package permits one to be enclosed in a package, the other on outside with address. You too may have received same information concerning prisoners of war from our War department. We received information concerning Roy J's internment from Y.M.C.A. before we did from our War depratment. We are risking his receiving a package also mail and are anxiously awaiting word from him in his own handwriting_ Vincent White of Amarillo and officer friend of Roy J's (and the one who assisted him to convoy overland, part of the soldiers who left Ft. Knox last March for Camp Dix) is a prisoner of war of the Italian Government and his fathdf thinks the Camp is near Rome. He received his first information through the Vatican, through the Apostolic delegation in Washington and Bishop FitzSimon of Amarillo. It seems the International Red Cross organization and Y.M.C.A. of Geneva Switzerland are doing wonderful work for our prisoners of war. If you have not heard yet where your son is a prisoner I do hope you shall soon hear. Should you like for me to I'll be glad to send you the letter from the Y.M.C.A. secretary. There are seven offices the one in New York is 345 Madison Ave. The heading of the stationery says, war Prisoners' Aid of Y.M.C.A. under the auspices of World's Committee of Y.M.C.A. Geneva Switzerland cable address_"Flemgo"_ The general secretary of the Y.M.C.A. is Tracy Strong Geneva Switzerland. Perhaps you have had recent information and may not be interested in the above, but the other offices are Toronto Canada 21 Rundor Sq. London England 4. Great Russell Paris, France 29 Rue St. Didier Marseilles France, 1 Rue Pytheas Berlin Germany 34 Wilhelmstrasse Calcutta India, 5 Russell St. and the one of New York. Should you hear any information from your son we shall be glad to hear too for we do feel we appreciate and understand your anxiety since we have mutual interest in our sons. Our son had lost all of his belongings and at the time of capture was wearing a British uniform as "replacement clothing". Perhaps there will soon be an exchange of prisoners?? Heres hoping each of us will soon hear better news. Sincerely, Julie Nash Chappell (Mrs Roy J. Chappell)
