- 12/15/25 Mr. Amon G Carter Fort Worth Texas My Dear Mr. Carter I am writing this letter to you and to you alone--It would do me no good for others to know it and it might do me harm. I am glad that you did not resign as regemt of the Texas Tech--and allow me to say that in my opinion no one expected you to do so. I have seen you so often in exubrious spirits when I knew there was nothing to drink and that you have had none. In that respect you are very much like I was when of your age. The man who is not enthusiastic doesn't do much. You are a doer of things. I used to be proud of the fact that in building Fort Worth. The public put me in a class with-W.A. Huffman-more-B.C. Evans-Jos H. Brown-Peter Smith-all of whom were much older than I. They have all pased away. You have taken the place of all of them. My time of life has passion for the doing of great things. It was my hope and desire by this time to have accumulated sufficient funds to have let my money take the place of the energy and enthusiasm of my younger days. I (illegible) big men_ men of vision and men of breadth of mind. I had (illegible) for a (illegible) to (illegible) differently from my way of thinking than to stand still. While I know you are wrong in the estimation you have for the Fergusons, still you do not surprise me in your fairness through your great paper to them. That shows a truly great man. Your work for Fort Worth (illegible) you as a man of the class of those mentioned above. If you had now to help you such men as B. C. Evans, Waller Huffman Peter Smith, Joe Brown there is no telling to what heights our great city would reach. It was the enusthiasm of men as Amon G. Carter that caused the building of the Texas Hotel. It was Carter alone who (illegible) the enthusiasm that built the great Ft Worth Club building. It was Carter who built up the greatest circulation in the South for this paper. It is Carter who is now our leader and we must all work together. I have not been able to do my part but in the future it is my place to follow my leader in the ranks of all loyal citizens just the same as they followed me in my younger days. The oportunity is yours. You are fair, you are intelligent, you are courageous. You have done once and you are doing a great work for Texas Tech, and the youth of our state. I am not here for long the work must be done by the younger generation. Our city is (illegible) of white people, intelligent educated working people, high prices and capable men and women in the workshops of our city. We have by far the most intellectual high class working people in the South. I am sending to you with this letter my check for $100 to pay for one of the 7% bonus. I can't bear to have the club of which I been a member for 39 years to occupy their new building without my contributing something. I have been sparing of my salary so that I could make this small investment. Mrs. Swayne is now with me and of course my expenses are heavy. I will be there 17-18-19-20 holding sessions and at Dallas the 21st. I am as ever your friend Jas. W. Swayne
