Description
43/7/4 Dear Folks, Everything ok. This new camp we are is certainly a lot better than the last one. It is near several small villages and the country is really pretty, especially at this time of the year, all though during the winter, January, especially, the days are pretty bad. It is frequently thirty below. Hope that you can send me gobs of warm clothes, especially some blankets. If you decide they can't arrive before December 30th, better not send. Don't worry though for me already have some and hope that we get some more but all extras will help. I think packages take about 4 months to get here. Today is the Fourth and we had a memorial service for your friends who gave their lives in Africa. We couldn't sing our national anthem, but were permitted to sing "God Bless America" which made us feel swell. We also had oatmeal for breakfast which was a treat because lunch is our first meal. Then tonight we all got together and sang songs about different states. You should have heard the Texas officers let go with "Deep in the Heart of Texas." Save hope I am there this time next year. We see in the German papers where the coal miners are striking again. Most of the officers are pretty mad about it and all of us would gladly change plans with them. They at least get three meals a day. Have only one letter from both of you which was mailed on April 21st and some officers have received letters mailed in NY in June so we should be getting a lot one of these days. Am getting along fine so don't worry. Try and send some magazines. Give Ruth and Katrine my love. All my love, Amon, Jr.
