Description
U.S. Navy Yard Portsmouth, N.H. 1 May, 1944 Dear Katrine, I received your letter last Saturday and really did appreciate it. I enjoyed reading Amon's letter so very much, as it made him seem so much nearer. I showed them to Maxine and four or five of my friends who have heard so much about him that they feel as if they know him. I noticed that the German censors shipped up a little bit when they did not allow for the imprint of the pencil. I can't imagine why they marked out the words "black pepper" and "Mexico and Colorado Springs." I also noticed that Amon receives mail faster by putting a 30 (cent) air mail stamp on. I didn't know this made a difference, but I will make use of this information from now on. Maxine and I are getting along fine. The winter has been nice, but I am really looking forward to summer as I have had enough snow for quite a while. I am engaged in engineering work on the submarine up here, and although I go to sea with them on about 1 day this cruise most of my work is on shore. I guess someone has to stay here in the States, but when I think f the sacrifice of Amon and the rest of my friends I sometimes get pretty low. However, I have enjoyed being with Maxine as long as I have. I want to thank you again for sending me Amon's letters. Is there anything I can do for him or send him? Give my best regards to Mr. Carter and Ruth. They have always been so nice to me, and I think about them a lot. Love Pat.
