- Description
- 22 April '44 Dear Mr. Carter, Just after receiving your letter of Dec. 10th, I became involved in our present operation and neglected correspondence. I was very glad to get the latest news, at that time, of Amon, Jr. Since then Mary has secured more recent news from your secretary and passed it on to me here. With the "big show" to happen soon, I hope it will not be long until Amon, Jr. can be liberated and return home. Last night there was a get-to-gether of all Ex-A.&M. students on the Anzio beachhead. There were 36 officers attending, and a number here who were too busy at the time to attend. I saw Lt. Col. Burke Brewster there. He is now our Corps surgeon, or rather acting in that capacity. I have been receiving the Sunday editions of the Star-Telegram, and understand that the Stock Show was quite successful this year in its new home on the west side. I was glad to hear of the usual rodeo and livestock show being held this spring, and hope it will be continued. This was the first one I have missed in more than twenty years. I hope to see the next one. This campaign has been considerably tougher than anticipated. The Nazis are not nearly whipped yet. However, we have accounted for many of them, and continue to take a daily toll of the Krauts. We are accomplishing a mission of containing a number of German divisions that might otherwise be used on other fronts. They are paying a big price in men to hold us here. Amon, Jr.'s organization is doing a wonderful job. The next time you write please give Amon, Jr. my regards. I hope that you will see him safely at home before this year has ended. Sincerely, D.G. Talbot
