Dear Mr. Carter: - It is unfortunate that time did not permit your coming out to Will Rogers' Ranch before returning to Fort Worth. That is the price one pays for success - too many things to do and too little time in which to do them. I have a feeling that, that was one of the reasons Will Rogers took that flight into nowhere. Just a chance to get away from the center of things and get a true perspective of things in general. I know your visits out here bring back many fond but sad memories. In reading about the dedication ceremonies at the Will Rogers Memorial at Claremore, Okla., Nov. 4 1940, I was glad to hear that Will Rogers considered his foreword to Charlie Russell's Trails Plowed Under, the finest thing he ever wrote - remember, he read it to you, Mr. C. R. Smith an Fred Stone when you visited him here at the ranch? I have always felt the same away about it, and, had he been writing about you or Fred Stone, I know he would have said things which were equally as fine about each of you. After almost six-and-one-half years as curator here at the ranch, and having talked with hundreds of thousands of guests, I am sure that of all Qill Rogers personal friends, he loved you, Charlie Russell and Fred Stone most. Since you were not here to decide upon the location of the bronze head of Will Rogers which you are so graciously sending to us, I am enclosing a large photograph and several postcards of the living room and alcove. They may help you to decide. My choice would be the corner of the alcove where I have marked "X" on the postcard and which corresponds to the "X" marked to the left of the calf in the large photograph. That way it would be in full view when entering from the side or end doors. Also, because of the large view window in the alcove, it will have excellent lighting. I am anxious to know what your choice will be. Please be assured that I shall do everything possible to see that it is as you would like to have it. And if Will Rogers looks down from heaven as he pictured Charlie Russell looking down (in his foreword to Trails Plowed Under), I am sure you will make your old friend Will, and all his friends and admirers who visit here - very, very happy.
