- The Garner family at home in Texas. It was this family of home loving, land loving people that John Nance Garner, Speaker of the House, left 40 years ago to study law and to dabble in politics. They watch his career now from their homes in Detroit and Texas, where the Garners have lived for more than half a century. In the group are, left to right--Mrs. Maud Blair, sister of the Speaker; Jolly Garner and Jesse L. Garner, brothers; Mrs. John R. Wright, another sister; and Mrs. John N. Garner, Sr., the Speaker's mother. Garner's father is not living. John Nance Garner III (November 22, 1868 – November 7, 1967), known among his contemporaries as "Cactus Jack", was an American Democratic politician and lawyer from Texas. He was the 32nd vice president of the United States, serving from 1933 to 1941. He was also the 39th speaker of the United States House of Representatives from 1931 to 1933. Garner and Schuyler Colfax are the only two individuals to serve as both vice president of the United States and speaker of the United States House of Representatives.
